Primo Shelving System

Casey Lurie Studio

One of the most elegant examples of shelving we've come across, maybe ever, we spotted this union of brass and wood at its debut at New York's ICFF show and quickly beelined to its humble creator, Casey Lurie. By creator, we mean Casey not only designed Primo but hand-makes these, too. The Chicago-based designer only set up his studio in 2012, following a 3-year residency with furniture maker Idee in Japan. The tradition of balance and subtlety so integral to the design culture there is reflected in Primo: the graceful planks and notched poles of ash, white oak or walnut paired with supports of either brass or stainless steel; when units are lined up, spacing between poles is consistent. Select from 2 heights, and 3 or 5 shelves. We think The Wall Street Journal summed it best when writer William L. Hamilton named it among the best in show, "Shelving can be the most mundane thing you own, or it can be the beautiful bones of a room—as pleasing to see as anything it displays. Casey Lurie's Primo system would be the latter."
